Ụmụ Chukwu -A Poem by Reginald I. Chiekezi

UMU CHUKWU

-Reginald .I. Chiekezi

Maybe it is their orient smile,

the resilient fur of their spirit,

the sturdiness they rock like rucksack;

maybe it is the ingenuity cast in their marrow,

their believe that God comes first;

maybe it is these that have given UMU CHUKWU

this subtle, sea-wise confidence

which Casca admire but

vainly skew as stiff-necked simile.

Maybe it is the communal pearl

bedecking their ant-rung rise;

the pollen they spread across arid outcrop;

maybe it is their webbed feet

ploughing earth’s ends in profound pursuit

as Jerusalem oil on Catholic mission

traverse worlds;

maybe it is the symphony of their dogged prosperity that vexed Brutus’ sword.

Whatever! Whatever the reason for rain of swords against them, every cut trigger their

flagship song: unwind zeal towards

robust success and self-dom –

which lives eternally in their Agu anatomy.
